Hey Jake. You’ve been so good to your avid readers all year. I just want to say a massive thank you and to wish you a very fine Christmas and a belter of a New Year when they arrive. Also, what would be on your list of best tracks / albums of the year? In no particular order...
Ah very kind, thank you for the lovely comment - and for all the support this year, it's really much appreciated. Hope you and your family have a fantastic festive season.
So there's actually an end of year round-up post in the Concrete Avalanche back-end that I'm still applying the finishing touches to and a 2023 in review mix that I made for ChinaTalk, both of which will hopefully be out before the year runs out. A lot of my favourite tracks / albums from China are covered with those, though I probably forgot some...
But! For non-China releases (which I don't think you're really asking but here we are), some of my favourites in 2023 were:
Gonubie, Signals At Both Ears
Carlos Niño & Friends, (I'm Just) Chillin', On Fire
Amy May Ellis, Over Ling and Bell (she's great live)
Mayssa Jallid, Marjaa: The Battle of the Hotels
Matthew Halsall, An Ever Changing View (again, really enjoyed him live)
(Was a very jazz and ambient year for me I suppose)

Ace. Look forward to it! And thanks for the preview. I don’t know any of these. Off to Bandcamp right now...
"including a whole room of people singing the words to ‘Kill the One From Shijiazhuang’"
Goosebumps.
