I try my best not to be a sweaty male monstrosity with sharpened elbows when I go to gigs, but apart from that I completely share the Austin crowd’s excitement at seeing Fazi for tte first time. I felt the same. The tour video is a curious thing. Almost has the touch of the Rattle and Hum about it. They are a sincere bunch.

yeah it's a bit of an odd one... feels melancholic at times. At least they tried to give it more of a narrative than some other tour videos from Chinese bands - the idea of them expanding their horizons and trying to grow as a group.

The unintentionally funny moments are quite illuminating as well - like the band talking about being used to playing "high quality venues in China" in contrast to what they got in the US (I know they mean big gig venues vs more down-to-earth spots, but it's still an interesting way of framing it initially) and when the guy at SXSW tells them they have "so much potential", as if they're just starting out. It's all well meaning and understandable of course, just that those moments stood out to me.

Shame the tour wasn't as extensive as they'd initially hoped, but good for them for wanting to play to different audiences and get out of their comfort zone.

Absolutely. Eyes wide open. They really seemed to enjoy flying under the radar. But it’s a real shame they had to cancel some gigs. I like Liu Peng a lot. I loved the wee segment about his daughter after their performance of Control on the Big Band. (38 mins in) https://www.iq.com/play/19rrhl8olx?sh_pltf=4&lang=en_us

It’s nice how that version of ‘Control’ has become the definitive one now (using his daughter singing the intro I mean) – last time I saw them live in Fuzhou the crowd went wild the second her voice was heard; they knew immediately what was coming. Such an anthem that track, and they actually do a much better version of it these days than the one on Root of Innocence I feel (same for ‘Xiamen’).

Would be fun if they really did follow through on the idea of going back to smaller gigs in China. Like, a handful of “secret” on the floor / in the round shows at smaller venues or something…

On repeat ever since it appeared on the concrete avalanche playlist! Such a banger. Great video and lyrics too.

There is no vinyl of the album, is there? (Ordering inside China is an option)

I’ve not seen any mention of any physical format for it yet to be honest. Maybe Mars seem to be a bit sporadic in that regard these days so hard to predict, but so far seems to be digital only
